80th Anniversary of
NY to Paris Flight
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
80th year Anniversary marks New York to Paris flight
San Diego, CA – On May 21st, 2007 the 80th Anniversary of the first non-stop transatlantic flight
will be celebrated. In 1927, as the world rebuilt after the Great War, an incredible success erupted
across the news bulletins. A lone pilot had amazed the world with a feat that confirmed the dawn of
a new age. A young unknown pilot, Charles Lindbergh, had accomplished the impossible thus
winning the Orteig Prize. In 33 ½ hours he had flown the Atlantic and landed on a grassy Paris
airfield over 3,600 miles from New York City.
Just as astonishing, sixty days prior to this flight, the airplane Lindbergh would eventually donate to
hang in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum did not even exist. The Spirit of St. Louis was but
a deliberation in the mind of another unknown hero, Donald Hall the lone Chief Engineer. Hall had
only recently been hired into the chief engineer position when Lindbergh’s strange telegram arrived.
Putting his personal reputation on the line, Hall accepted the huge risk by agreeing to the contract
and the planes express delivery date. Sixty days later, thru teamwork and decisive action, a silver
plane with a uniquely aerodynamic design shimmered in the San Diego sun. It had no forward
window, a giant nose, and a periscope. Like no other aircraft preceding it, the Spirit had one
singular purpose, one primary goal, to win the Orteig Prize of $25,000.
Eighty years have passed since these two men watched as the world changed before their eyes.
Much as Burt Rutan’s Space Ship 1 has set the stage for a titanic shift in human space flight, Hall’s
Spirit of St. Louis set the stage for the next generation of faster and more astounding aircraft. As
the Spirit of St. Louis touched down, millions were finally convinced that insubstantial air could
actually carry a wary public into the clouds. In taking these extreme risks and trusting in the
solidness of steel, the 80th year Anniversary represents a milestone of American aviation as we
continue towards the stars.
